The Myth of Self Employment

Artemas-Photography-Baltimore-Lancaster-Portrait-Photographer

Oh, Self Employment. It’s a blessing, it’s a curse, it’s crazy, it’s fun, and it can break you down in a matter of minutes. Those of you out there who walk this line every day know what I’m talking about. You probably have someone in your life who says, “Stop thinking about work.” But it’s really, really, really difficult to do. After all, you’re in charge of everything. Bills need paid? That’s you. Phone needs answered? You. All those emails? You again. And when a client has a complaint? Yep, it’s on you. The advertising, the marketing, the pricing, the accounting, etc. etc. etc. And it can make you question your sanity at the end of the day.

Right now, our studio is closed until the end of January. And you know what? Some people have said, “It must be nice to not have to work for an entire month!” And I’m guessing it must be. But I wouldn’t know. As I type this, it’s 2:20 in the morning. I just got home from the studio and my work day started at 6:00 yesterday morning. That’s a 19 hour day. So yes, the studio is closed. But no, that doesn’t mean we’re not hard at work. There is an entire year to prepare for and some loose ends to tie up from last year. And I’ve learned over the years that January is a great time to take a breath, look around, and get organized.

Now you may be wondering what I could have been doing for 19 hours. Accounting. Numbers. End of year finances. I hate hate hate hate doing the numbers. Actually, I hated the numbers when I started. Now I’ve spent so much time doing them, I’m starting to love them. It’s kind of like runner’s euphoria.  And yes, I’m a photographer, not an accountant. Although I put all my numbers together, I will hand them over to a professional to take care of taxes. It’s safer for everyone.

Speaking of numbers, I once worked for a company who said, “The drudgery of the numbers will set you free.” And you know, it’s kind of true. The more you know about your numbers, the more you can manage where you are and where you are going. So it’s become my resolution for 2015 to embrace the numbers and own them. I used to hide my head in the sand on accounting day. This year I’ll at least poke one eye out and take a look.

I hope everyone is having a great start to 2015 and enjoy the weekend! I know I will. I’m self employed so I can do whatever I want! As long as it involves work.
